An Introduction to Nelly's Fashion

Did you know that gold teeth have been in fashion for thousands of years? One team of archaeologists uncovered a grave with grillz dating to 2500 BC! From Tajikistan to Mexico and the Philippines, people have sported elaborately decorated teeth for more than 4,500 years.

Of course, somewhere over the millennia, tooth bejeweling fell out of vogue for most people. This fact begs an interesting question. What made grillz so popular today?

If you said, Nelly grillz, you're on to something. Keep reading to learn more about this hip-hop legend's uber-famous gold-and-diamond teeth, and how you can recreate his look.

Who Is Nelly?

With his 2000 solo debut album and single by the same name, Country Grammar (2000), Nelly burst onto the charts. A fresh sound and unique approach to music ensured the hits would keep on coming.

His next four albums smashed record after record, each garnering one of the coveted top three spots on the Billboard chart. Countless singles made the top 20, earning him two Grammy Awards in the process.

He also earned the reputation as one of the most dapper men in hip-hop pairing impeccable style and attention to detail with some of the finest-crafted gold and diamond teeth.

A true Renaissance man, when Nelly's not collaborating on hit songs or writing them himself, he's making successful forays into television and film. In 2005, he starred in the remake of The Longest Yard with Adam Sandler and Chris Rock, wearing a diamond-encrusted lower grillz at the premier.

He's also starred in episodes of CSI:NY and made a cameo in 90210. From 2014 to 2015, he let the world get a sneak peek inside his life with Nellyville, where he regularly sported gold and iced out grillz.

From Missouri to Megastar

Born November 2, 1974, as Cornell Haynes, Jr., in Missouri, he had varied interests coming up, but rap would eclipse everything else. He formed his first musical group, St. Lunatics, with a handful of high school friends.

St. Lunatics enjoyed local success with their self-produced single, "Gimme What You Got." Soon, though, the group disbanded, believing Nelly would do better as a solo act.

The decision proved providential. Nelly quickly signed with Universal, launching his career. Country Grammar (2000) skyrocketed Nelly to fame, but he didn't forget about his St. Lunatics bandmates. Lil Wayne, Cedric the Entertainer, and City Spud featured on the album.

The album went platinum a total of nine times in the US and debuted on the Billboard 200 chart at number three. Peaking at number one on the chart, the album's single "Country Grammar" reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the rap chart.

The video for "Country Grammar" showed Nelly wearing various St. Louis jersies and blinged-out grillz. It's little surprise, considering he put the "z" in grills.

Topping Charts and Dropping Singles

"Ride wit Me," featuring City Spud, hit number three, further cementing its immense success. A year later, Nelly was back in the studio with St. Lunatics. Their first album, Free City, topped the charts at number three.

Nelly's stroke of musical gold would continue with Nellyville (2002). In 2003, he received the Grammy Award for the Best Male Rap Solo Performance with "Hot in Herre." The follow up to this success brought a collaboration with Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child on "Dilemma."

"Dilemma nabbed the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Performance, and it's been one hit after another ever since. Other notable singles include "Work It" featuring Justin Timberlake and "Air Force Ones" with St. Lunatics' Murphy Lee.

In 2004, he released Sweat and Suit, which both skyrocketed to the top of the charts. Riding high in the music world, he had an immeasurable impact on pop culture with the 2005 release of his iconic song "Grillz," which headed straight to number one.

Many people credit "Grillz" with fueling the rebirth of tooth jewelry as a status symbol. There are also those detractors that say the fashion statement started with 80s rap legend Slick Rick. Considering the fact grillz exploded in 2005 shortly after Nelly's song hit, our money's on him.

Hip-Hop's Most Dapper Gentleman

If you're an admirer and want to emulate this hip-hop and R&B megastar, Nelly teeth grillz are a fantastic place to start. That said, there's a lot more to Nelly's image than bejeweled teeth. He's one of the most dapper gentlemen in hip-hop, with the style and grooming to prove it.

For starters, Nelly's obsessed with athletic shoes, the proud owner of at least 50 exclusive pairs. But style doesn't stop at his feet.

No matter where he goes, he travels with a barber. The barber cuts his hair and provides a shave before photoshoots.

And when he must travel barber-less? Then, Nelly sports a thin mustache.

Although his daily uniform includes jeans and Converse, he doesn't mind stunning in a suit and tie. He's even got an Armani tux for special occasions. The style connoisseur shops online, and his favorite store remains Dolce & Gabbana.

Recently, news broke that he's relaunching his '00s clothing brand, Apple Bottoms. He also has ambitious plans for relaunching Troop Clothing, the late '80s line made famous by LL Cool J.
